Building the Next Generation of Welding Programs with AWS Fundamentals of Welding Curriculum

December 2025

Welding educators today face a familiar challenge: delivering instruction that’s both comprehensive and adaptable, while ensuring students gain skills recognized by industry professionals. Without a strong foundation, instructors can spend more time planning than teaching — leaving students less prepared when they enter the workforce.

The Fundamentals of Welding Curriculum (FOWC) from the American Welding Society addresses that challenge head-on. Developed by AWS experts and classroom-tested by instructors, FOWC provides a complete, standards-based teaching framework — from lesson plans and PowerPoints to lab manuals, assessments, and online modules. It’s a full system designed to let educators focus on teaching, not on building materials from scratch.

“When we chose fundamentals of welding curriculum,” said Curt Claycomb, Platte County School District Industrial Welding Instructor, “it was primarily because of its comprehensive content, its connection with the American Welding Society SENSE Program, as well as covering everything that our state requires in the classroom.”

Built-in flexibility helps reach every learner, whether through reading, visual demonstrations, hands-on practice, or online modules. Videos and step-by-step instructions show the correct techniques, while the curriculum’s breadth ensures students understand not just how to weld, but why each process matters.

The impact extends beyond the classroom. Students leave with a solid understanding of welding fundamentals, ready to pursue industry-recognized certifications, internships, apprenticeships, or college credit. Claycomb states, “When students learn through this curriculum, they know they’re getting fundamentals that apply across any job in the welding industry.”

FOWC also supports educators themselves. For many instructors transitioning from industry to the classroom, it offers structure and guidance that makes lesson planning and student assessment more efficient. Claycomb continues: “Having gotten my CWI through the American Welding Society myself, I can see connection with a lot of the inspection and review of the welds that the students need to learn.”

By aligning with FOWC, schools don’t just standardize instruction — they connect students to a trusted industry authority, preparing the next generation of welders to enter the workforce with confidence and competence.
